“multilocation”

(2019)

digital illustration of writing. (holy okra) 5.5”x4”, (moonlight tea) 5.5”x5”, (apple fries) 5.5”x6”

n this series of text illustrations, i drew inspiration from A. Van Jordan’s M-A-C-N-O-L-I-A (2005). i appropriated his dictionary definition style poetry to create pieces of writing that try to express what feels like being in the same place at once. i aim to capture the feeling of comfort in belonging and not belonging simultaneously. Each illustration represents the different places i identify with—the titles subtly allude to each location through the inclusion of the food i associate with each place. With each piece of writing i outlined a specific memory to create a sense of the warm familiarity i have with the places i call home.
